What a way to start off July!
Napa City Nights – Jessica Martindale, The Grain & Girls & Boys
Jessica Martindale at 6:30pm
More than a songwriter. There is courage in her pulse. An aching wisdom in her voice. A woman whose music has the stripped down, real-deal beauty that comes from risking everything. Not bowing even to the indie idol of irony, her crisp, sultry voice answers only to honesty, and is its own license to croon. Her songs spring from an undeniable passion, in the old-school, sweating-blood sense of the word.
She hails from Carolina woods and the SoCal coast, has been behavioral therapist, rising HR guru, struggling artist and has sometimes sprinted, sometimes staggered through seasons of life. She knows now what to do with her voice.
She is equal parts songstress and careful crafter of melody, but as she sings she creates connection—with her listener, now present in the strangeness of intimacy. Her songs become the sowing grounds for gathering—they are an invitation to hope and strive with the tribe-building spirit of dream-chasers and risk-takers, an invitation to confront and surrender, to experience the beauty of the human heart when it opens.
A mainstay of the Petaluma Rock scene, The Grain has gained notoriety with local music lovers who flock to Sonoma County’s best venues to get down with P-Town’s most powerful quartet. Guitarist and songwriter, Pete Delaney, has played his special blend of Rock and Blues up and down the West Coast for over two decades. He is backed by the one and only Graham Stearns on bass, guitarist extraordinaire, Erik Stieg, and the funky drummer, Sean England. The Grain’s music consists of a balance of well crafted original songs and classic cover tunes that often lead into extended solos and jams creating a musical environment that engages both the mind and body.
Girls & Boys are a band based out of Santa Rosa, California who are on the rise. Led by the soulful vocals of front-woman Brianna Lee (vocals, guitar), the band’s dynamics back up her every move with power, grace and an undeniable chemistry, making for a captivating live show. Girls & Boys unique sound covers ground from indie and rock to delicate, bluesy ballads brought to life by it’s players: Nick Simmons (guitar), Josh Barrett (bass), and Ross Barbieri (guitar, vocals). Their heart pounding live performances have led the group to play some of the top venues in California including Great American Music Hall, Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Vina Robles Amphitheater, The Mint Los Angeles, Mystic Theatre, Bottle Rock Festival in Napa, and The Sweetwater Music Hall – to name a few – and to receive the Bay Area Bohemian’s Best Indie Band in 2012.
Currently in the finishing stages of their sophomore album, outside of the studio Girls & Boys have been touring California opening for acts such as Elvis Costello, The Doobie Brothers, Allen Stone, Goo Goo Dolls, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers and more. Since their debut release in 2012 people near and far have been taking notice and “The Feel of The Sun”‘s strong sonic quality and songwriting landed various Film and TV placements including 2013’s “Divorce Invitation” and the Showtime Reality series “The Real L Word”. With roots that date back to 2007, when bassist Josh Barrett and vocalist Brianna Lee met at an open mic, the band’s passion has always been a common one: to play music straight from the heart, with power and soul.
