Automattic, the company that created the Wordpress.com blogging platform and oversees the Wordpress.org open source project, has rejected a $200 million acquisition offer, says multiple sources. Half the price was to be paid in cash, half in stock in the buyer. The company, which has raised just $1.1 million in capital, has been on a tear lately. They acquired avatar startup Gravatar earlier this month. And Comscore says Wordpress.com had nearly 63 million unique worldwide visitors in September 2007, up 66% from May’s 38 million visitors. What I don’t know is the company’s revenue.[TechCrucnch]
Well this has been talked about for a while. Automattic picked up Gravataar, and after the Facebook fiasco, one article after another has been popping up with who’s next.
I’m not shocked they’ve been offered to be bought. I’m slightly surprised at the amount. But a large network like Wordpress.com, the subscriptions and upgrades money that does come in.
One question. Will a large enough amount get paraded by? Will Matt hold on like Craig Newman (http://www.craigslist.org) has and pick what he does with his company rather then walk away? Ok 2 combined questions and not a whole lot of substance.
Except I have to give Matt props for his integrity. He had the conviction to explain why he didn’t always let comments from me on his blog get posted (to my face), I used to have a lot of crap ads on here (well in his mind).
