After going through the Napa Home and Garden Show this weekend. And then reading and looking at all the great pictures of the MakerFaire (Post with links next), I ran across this great tutorial on building a treehouse.
FamilyFun.com has a great step by step set of instructions to help you build a simple treehouse. How many of us as kids either had treehouses or desperately wanted one? Well, now’s your chance - the instructions are easy to follow, the materials are relatively cheap, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. Perfect for summer, I’d say.

I love how detail the instructions are. And though we don’t have a tree good enough in our backyard, I can adjust the plans for a freestanding fort instead. The hard part is knowing how much use it will get. You must always take that in account. And build with that in mind. The “perfect size” openings may be too small as they get bigger. Plus what may seem cute and quaint may be too small also for your kid later. But in the same vein you don’t want them too big. So perhaps something that can grow with your child. It helps that many hardware stores now carry certain parts such as slides and swings that can be added into your plans.
