Ok besides being the founder of Wordpress and an all around nice guy Matt also tends to be a pretty good writer, when he isn’t doing one of his brief “asides.” And for that reason I actually bother to read every one of his posts. I’m not sure if its because I’m geeky, and I even like it when he posts a link to a strange formula (I think I remember him doing that while ago) that I didn’t really understand, but hey looked interesting. I really am a stumbleupon trained person.
Anyways, I was reading his latest post Meaningful Overnight Relationship and first off I was I chuckled at the title verses his beginning paragraph in which he said to get a good write up in an article you had to give them only what they wanted. If they wanted to write about how young he was, then you’d notice questions aimed at how old he was when starting.
Now Matt was 19 when he started this, and he did have a good bit of help, but they tend to ignore that. He does have quite a bit of financial help, but he isn’t rich off the project, and he’s said before that he doesn’t plan to sell it. But they’ll gloss over that. But I liked how he put it:
What’s worst is I think these stories sell a false promise and hope to people outside of the industry — it attracts the wrong type of entrepreneurs — and inside of the industry it distracts us from what really matters.
The focus of the Wordpress team has really impressed me. They have all to a tee been polite and always helpful. Even to annoying guys who ask questions that would of been answered in 30 seconds of Googling… for the most part. The Codex (wiki) is a wonderful thing, I’ve just got to get that embedded in my mind.
Now I’ve commented before that Wordpress has been adopted by many corporations for use as either their blogging system, a CMS, or to replace a “News” site. And it may be hard for some to believe that Matt isn’t getting rich off it all. But considering all the hardware he has to pay for, bandwidth and hosting bills, and plus wages for those on the automattic crew. I’d be surprised if he’s making any more then low to mid level management salary. After all its not like he has tons of Google Adsense everywhere and advertising money coming in.
