Thanks ImageshackI’ve heard of make-shift Outdoor Movies, here in Napa a local movie theatre used to take over the Veteren’s Park in Downtown Napa and set’s up a screen and showed old classics. And in Santa Cruz it’s done quite often, with a fairly large organized group doing the exact same thing. It’s actually gotten the nickname of Guerrilla Drive-In… but in Santa Cruz it’s more Walk-In. Well, for some time Bryan Kennedy has organized and detailed how to do MobileMovies (MobMov). MobMov has been growing with Chapters now all over the country and even over the world. With the original Chapter in Berkley it’s not surprising that there are other “Venues” near Napa. Checking I found a chapter in Sacramento, about as far as from Berkley (1 hour), and chapters being started in Sonoma and Santa Rosa.

Thanks ImageshackYou get a group of people together, meeting at an abandoned warehouse or place with a large flat surface. Park the projecter vehicle in the middle, and have all the other cars park along side them. Get everyone on the same FM station and start the movie (once it’s dark). The basic idea is great, I missed the old Drive-In in town. And the last time I went to a drive in was a few years ago in San Jose.
Considering the requirements list it’s not too expensive, but it would take a bit of money. They had to remove the “manifesto” from the website because of the amount of traffic. But here is what I can think of just off the top of my head:

  • Digital Projector
  • FM Transmitter
  • Hefty AC Converter (to power everything)
  • DVD Player

Optional Equipment

  • Laptop (Way to post additional info via Power Point)
  • Marine or Car Batteries (no car running)
  • Antenna (If the FM Transmitter needs moddding)
  • Video Game System (Might not always want movies)

As you see it really wouldn’t be too difficult. And if you offer to set one up, Brain Kennedy offers to help you get set up. And give you suggestions on how to work around problems.
